So your Mac is no longer as good as it used to be and needs a boost afterwards. Think about what you want to do on your old PC, and then consider defragmenting your hard drive – that should have the same effect on a Mac, right? After all, it made your current computer much faster.

Windows requires periodic disk defragmentation: in Windows 10 (as well as in Windows 8 and Windows 7), defragmentation is performed weekly in automatic mode (you will notice that in the latest version of the operating system this feature is oncalled simply “Optimize Disk”). you can configure how often these defragments run).

    Apple

on the other ring finger has never integrated defrag software for macOS. “Why is this?” You can ask. Well, there are a number of reasons why Macs don’t offer this feature for simple defragmentation:

  • Macs don’t experience the kind of fragmentation that Windows PCs experience in the first place.
  • Automatically defrag modern Mac files, they’ve been doing this since OS X 10.2 was released in 2002.
  • Defragmentation can damage the absolute disk as moving files can wear out the disk.
  • If you definitely have an SSD, defragmenting won’t do any good and will damage that drive.
  • Can you defrag a Mac drive?

Defragmenting a Mac moves bits associated with data on your hard drive, allowing files and programs to fill up faster. Disk Defragmenter reorders the files on your hard drive to make it easier to access your computer. However, defragmenting a Mac is rarely needed because the Mac can defragment itself.

In this article, we should explain why you probably shouldn’t defragment your Mac, the unusual cases when you need to defrag your Mac, what can actually cause the problems you are solving, and how to defrag your Mac if you need something.

But before we get to that, let’s start with an explanation.I’m talking about how data is written to disk, why PCs should be able to defrag, and why other strategies apply to Macs.

Why Do Some Computers Need To Be Defragmented

    Does Mac need defragmentation?

A Mac doesn’t need to try to defragment because the file system (originally HFS+, and more recently APFS) stops fragmenting and automatically defrags files when needed – if a file has more than eight fragments or less than 20MB, it will itself be defragmented.

How to defragment a MacBook Pro?

Since defragmenting a MacBook Pro requires a third-party tool, we decided to highlight Drive Genius, a reputable computer cleaning tool with an effective defrag feature. Before starting the defragmentation, we must choose to create a backup copy of our files. Then, as you can see, you can select the “Defragmentation” option from the Drive Genius menu.

When a file is saved to a PC’s hard drive, it fills the available space beautifully and efficiently. After a long day of using for disk on files you have deleted, many lookups may remain, instead of leaving those gaps clean when saving the file, Windows will convert it to a Move file associated with these flaws. (Similar to each of our images below, which by the way are definitely from a Mac app that has been deprecated.)

If you really want to save a large computer file, like a video, you may need to break and even fragment the following pieces at some of the best spaces. The PC knows where certain parts of the file are located, but when dealing with a large number of fragmented files, it can take a long time to find all the necessary parts before running the file.

When a drive is defragmented, many files are recycled to fill in the holes created when your files were deleted, effectively preventing file fragmentation and the fragmented files are merged.

This only applies to loaded drives, and not as much as before: NTFS (the most modern file system) is not as prone to fragmentation as FAT-32 (the older file system).

Is Disk Cleanup the same as defrag?

The first of these special tools is Disk Cleanup. This utility will help youWe free up more disk space so you can use it very well. The second software is disk defragmenter. When owners use your computer, they create data files and also delete files.

Also, modern SSDs (such as flash drives) may not want to be defragmented as this can damage them, as we’ll explain below.

Why Macs Don’t Need To Be Defragmented

As we’ll explain below, you probably don’t need to defragment your Mac. If any of the following conditions allow you, we assume that most defragments are not a solution to this problem:

  • Your Mac operating system is no older than 2002 (if so, we recommend updating your Mac!)
  • Your Mac has the best SSD installed.
  • If you are using High Sierra or Mojave and your boot system has switched to Apple’s new APFS, you don’t need to use third party tools to defragment your Mac as much as possible – it doesn’t. not everything will work.
  • Mac does not need to be defragmented because the file scheme (originally HFS+, and more recently APFS) helps avoid fragmentation and automatically defrags files correctly when: – if a file contains more than eight fragments, or often less than 20 MB; usually defragmented automatically.

How often should I DeFRaG my Mac?

In general, it is recommended that you defragment Macs or PCs with hard drives about once a month. There may be good reasons why a Mac might be slow, but defragmenting can help. But then again, not all Macs need to be defragmented. Let’s find out right away whether the Mac is a good candidate or not. When is the right time to defrag your Mac?

hfs+ could defrag files on the fly thanks to Hot File Clustering. Then in Mac OS X 10.2, released in 2002, someone came up with an even smarter way to stop fragmentation. A year later, in 2004, Hot File Adaptive Clustering came along, which identifies and updates frequently accessed but rare files, moves them to a dedicated area on my disk, and defrags them during the actual process.
